Thomas Kyd and Christopher Marlowe

Playwright Thomas Kyd was an acquaintance of Christopher Marlowe. They wrote for the same company, and even shared the same work space for a period. Marlowe's arrest, just ten days before he was reported killed, followed hot on the heels of Kyd's arrest. In Marlowe's last conversation with Thomas Kyd, he informed Kyd that he was going "unto the King of Scots," in other words, he was getting out of town before the religious thought-police swooped in for freethinkers like himself and Kyd. Marlowe urged Kyd to join him. Unfortunately, both playwrights were seized before either had a chance to leave town.

The latest news about Thomas Kyd comes from Brian Vickers, who says that the anonymous play Edward III was a Kyd/Shakespeare collaboration. This is interesting, since Kyd was known to Marlowe (Kyd, as far as we know, never met Shakespeare), and according to his own report, spent time with Marlowe "writing together" in the same chamber. Was it Christopher Marlowe that Kyd collaborated with on Edward III, rather than Shakespeare? Read my article at the MSC Blog to find out.
